My Skin Care Story & Botanics Review

My Skin Care Story & Botanics Review

Hello everybody,

As a Botanics Brand Ambassador I get sent some great skin care products and this month I can honestly say I’m more excited about them than I have ever been before!

Before I hop into what products I have received this month, I thought I’d share ‘my skin care story’ with you.

My Skin Care Story

In my early teens my skin got really bad and it was a major insecurity of mine, although I know this isn’t particularly uncommon- it’s one of the sucky parts of being a teenager. But I had lots of spots under the skin and they were beginning to scar.

So after a year or so of trying out different high street products, my Mum and I took a trip down to the Doctors and we were given a cream named Quinoderm. Quinoderm literally stripped my face, it made my (naturally oily combination) skin very dry, itchy and sore. It also did not make my blemishes any easier to conceal… if anything they were even more pronounced on my face. Although, after the initial erosion of my skin, it did clear away my under-the-skin spots. But only for a few months.

My skin quickly became ‘immune’ to Quinoderm… or I assume it did! It just stopped working, and at this point the high street skin care was barely touching my acne. So I was essentially in a worse position than I was before I started using Quinoderm.

My Aunt recommended using something less invasive and more of a long-term solution… but more pricey: Clinique. I can honestly say that Clinique was a huge game changer for me. By 16 I was using Cliniques’ Teenage Skincare Kit that consisted of a foam, a cleanser and a moisturiser. It worked really well on my skin. But it was also far more expensive than I could afford. So it became one of those gifts I got at Christmas or my birthday, or even at airports!

Age 18-20 and a student, I used mostly high street brands and that was great, my skin had calmed down and I was able to get away with using products such as Garnier face scrubs and all things Simple.

But recently my skin has flared up again… and its honestly really knocked my confidence. I’m 21 and I feel like I had my fair share of spots in my teenage years, but now I’m going through it all again. This time I can pin point why I have had this sudden flare up and it is simply from changing from a combination contraceptive pill, to a progesterone only pill… and my face did not like it! Or my back… or my chest... and to make it worse, these spots were scarring again.

So the pill, combined with Final Exams (aka. stress!) made for rather angry looking skin. Which leads me onto Botanics.

Botanics has acted, for me, in a very similar way that Clinique did a few years ago. It cleared up my face, without drying it out. It’s a long term skin care routine… with a much lower investment!

Plus there are so many different varieties that no matter what skin type you are, Botanics will have one perfect for you. It’s all natural and all from the Botanical Gardens at Kew Palace- which is well worth a visit, if you get the chance!

Botanics UK Products I Received This Month:

All Bright Soothing Eye Makeup Remover- £5.49

This product is really gentle and hydrating for the skin. You have to give it a good shake before putting it on a cotton pad and it practically melts the makeup off of your skin. The Hibiscus in the soothing formula also brightens the area around the eye, which is just another bonus!

Botanics 2

Radiant Youth Hydrating Eye Cream- £11.99

This nourishing eye cream helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and dark circles for a more illuminated under-eye appearance. I use it every night before bed and I have noticed how much more moisturised that area of my face feels. I use concealer under my eyes as part of my everyday makeup and I’m always conscious of drying out my skin, so it feel so good to target this area every night.

botanics 4

Radiant Youth Protecting Day Cream SPF 15- £9.99

The next two products are face creams… and both of them smell DIVINE. I can’t get over how good it smells. This day cream focusses on  radiance-boosting and is infused with a cocktail of anti-oxidants. It also helps to keep skin looking younger with added UV protection. I put this on about 5 minutes before I do my makeup, so that it soaks in and gives me a moisturised, but not sticky, base to apply my makeup to.

Botanics 1

Radiant Youth Replenishing Night Cream- £9.99

The night cream is similar in consistency to the day cream, and smells equally fantastic! I love having this as a step in my night skin care routine, my face just feels so fresh before bed. It also acts as an anti-aging cream and I am a firm believer that you are never too young to start using these! This cream is infused with a cocktail of antioxidants from the leaves of the Ginkgo plant.

If you fancy trying these products out, they are available on Botanics UK own website, or through Boots!

Spots, Zits, Blips and Pimples: Home Remedies and Top Tips

Spots, Zits, Blips and Pimples: Home Remedies and Top Tips

Have you ever woken up with a throbbing sensation on your face,  wandered into the bathroom and discovered that Mount Vesuvius grew on your face over night? This is the plague of teenage years (and often years after- sorry girls!)

First things first- spots are normal! It’s natural to compare yourself to others, but make sure it’s to an attainable image. By this, I mean a lot of people, particularly celebrities, are airbrushed. Even then, there are apps that can help ‘normal’ people to airbrush themselves too.

I pulled together some celebrities that have suffered with their skin:

Miley Cyrus: someone who had to live her teenage years in the spotlight claimed that “I used to have really bad breakouts. My mom took me in to see a doctor and we sorted that out. But it made me really insecure.”

Lorde: she took to Twitter in 2014 to post an unedited picture of herself, that she contrasted with one that had been altered. She encouraged fans to embrace their imperfections. She even uploaded a picture of herself to show fans the acne cream she puts on before bed. Normal teen: The 17-year-old posted a photo of herself covered in skin cream, with the caption, 'In bed in Paris with my acne cream on', last month

Victoria Beckham: has apparently struggles with skin for years. Apparently she was even nicknamed ‘spotty spice’ by some haters. She found a dermatologist and used his products to clear up her skin.

The point is: everyone struggles with blemishes, especially in your teenage years. It’s all about finding something that works best for your skin and sticking to it!

Here are some Home Remedies for you to try out!

1) HONEY.honey.jpg

  • Thought one of the best home remedies by far. It’s an antibacterial, and it cleans and moisturises your skin. With this, it has a mild bleaching affect and prevents scarring.
  • Method: put a drop of honey on the spot, leave it for an hour and wash it off!

2) TOOTHPASTE. toothpaste

  • Any white toothpaste has anti-inflammatory qualities in it.
  • It can even be used as a scrub, when mixed with salt, to remove black heads and clean your face.
  • Oh and this is all Gigi Hadid uses soooo….
  • Methods: My all time go-to if I’m caught out. If I haven’t got my full blown skin care regime with me, then toothpaste it is! You apply it and leave it to dry. I often leave it over night, the minty fresh smell doesn’t bother me, and I find it generally works better.

3) ICE. (ICE BABY)

ice.jpg

  • An anti-inflammatory, it fights inflammation and prevents swelling and pus when used on time. This is a great method to use if you have an event or photos in a few hours time- it makes it that bit less obvious and a lot easier to cover up!
  • Method: hold/rub it on and around the spot.

4) BAKING SODA. baking-soa.jpg

  • If you fancy raiding your Mum’s baking cupboard, Baking Soda is surprisingly another anti-inflammatory. I use this (or toothpaste) over night.
  • Method: simply mix it with water and quickly apply it to the spot, and the area surrounding it. It sets quickly though, so watch out for that! To wash it off later, use luke warm water and it will fall off in flake.

5) STEAM.

  • This cleanses the pours and tightens the skin. It also feels great!
  • Method: once you’ve taken your makeup off, but before cleansing, steam your face. This can simply be that you’ve run hot water in the sink and you lean over it for a few minutes. It will mean that the cleansing etc following this will be super effective.

6) LEMON JUICE. lemon.jpg

  • The acids in lemons keeps the skin dry and clean. Another perk is that it’s full of vitamin C helps to tighten your skin and acts as an anti-aging agent.
  • Method: mix lemon juice and honey to keep your skin hydrated and the pimple dry. It also draws out the pus (woo!)

7) CUCUMBER. cucumber.jpg

  • Method: grating cucumber and putting it over the spot acts as an inflammatory.

8) GARLIC. garlic.jpg

  • Needs must! If you eat lots of garlic it can prevent pimples in the first place. But, as another anti-bacterial, it can also be placed directly on the spot.
  • Method: place it on the spot, for a few hours, or over night. To get rid of the garlic-y whiff you can simply rub some toothpaste over it.

Just remember people don’t remember when you had a spot- because people don’t do that! Even with Mount Vesuvius you are b-e-a-utiful!

Embrace those flaws!

Hairstyle Hacks Every Girl Should Know

Hairstyle Hacks Every Girl Should Know

If you’re anything like me, sometimes (daily) you run late.  Whether you snooze the alarm one time too many or mess up your winged eyeliner, something always happens to make you have a last-minute panic. Though I love the idea of simply being fashionably late, I know that really my lack of punctuality soon becomes unfashionably annoying.

Queen.gif

During this getting ready frenzy, my hair usually falls to the bottom of my ‘to-do’ list. And, let’s be honest, having your hair ‘did good’ makes you feel ready to take on whatever the day may have in store for you! You can channel the g l a m. So I put together some tips I have learnt over the years to make getting out the door (with your hair intact!) that little bit easier.

mccarthy.gif

Here you go!

Spray your bobby pins with hairspray.

  • This way they stay in place all day!

Spray your toothbrush with hairspray to tame baby hairs.

  • I have always had baby hair at the front of my head… and they can really wind me up. As a child they would curl up and out, sort of like horns. I saw this hack online, tested the theory and it worked! So yay, bye horns, I win.

Put your hair in a high pony tail, then curl it.

  • I have this theory that if you wake up feeling even remotely crappy, you should spend that extra 5 minutes on yourself. Then, if it’s a reflection or a mirror in the bathroom, at a glance you look in control (even if you don’t feel it!). For some reason, having my hair put together, and giving others the idea that this girl has extra time to do her hair in the morning gives me great comfort. Nobody need know about the bed hair frenzy!meryl.gif
  • Anyway, I digress! It’s really quick to spruce up your hair by tying it into a high pony and curling it. This way, you look fabby and it’s taken you no more that 5 minutes!

Spray hairspray on your hand for a softer look.

  • I can sometimes go a little overboard on the hairspray, and then you have the crunchy, tacky feel to your hair. And nobody wants that! So if you spray it onto your hands, you can give your hair that little bit more volume. This gives a more natural curls look and saves you the wasted hairspray.

Blow dry your hair with cool air after blow drying it.

  • Blow drying my hair can take me aaaages, and there is nothing more frustrating than styling my hair and five minutes later looking like I’ve had a run in with a rabid squirrel. So blowing cool air prevents your hair from going frizzy and sets the style.
  • It’s kind of like washing your face with warm water, followed by cool!

Put mousse in your dry hair, then blow dry it.

  • If you’re having one of those volume-less, non-co-operative hair days- then this hack is perfect. By adding mousse to dry hair, then blow drying it, you add the volume you were lacking!
  • I personally find volume-less hair the hardest to work with.

Use talc powder instead of dry shampoo.

  • For those desperate times. I can most definitely say for blonds (brunettes- maybe try this out first!) this works wonders. It acts as a dry shampoo really nicely.

Put dry shampoo in the minute you wake up.3a2406db-6630-4d77-bd19-d909bc9919a3

  • Dry shampoo, my companion on lazy days, or those mornings when my hair is limp, volume-less and greasy! I try so hard not to wash my hair every day, it’s really not a great habit to get into- but greasy hair just makes me feel g r o s sSoooo dry shampoo is a God send. But a top tip is to put it on the minute you wake up as it takes a while to soak up the oils.
  • I always apply it before I do my makeup.

Put dry shampoo in before bed.

  • If it’s day 2 (or 3 or 4!) of not washing your hair, and you know it’s going to be looking a lil bit greasy in the morning, put some dry shampoo in before bed. This really works, not only do I wake up and think ‘huh, that’s not too bad’, it also makes it easier to style!

Only wash the front section of your hair.

  • Ladies, this is when your hair just ain’t cooperating. Whether you slept on it funny, it rained or you just need to feel f r e s h- wash the front section. It may seem odd, but it works. It’s easier to style and doesn’t take anywhere near as long as washing the lot!

Have a ‘go-to’ hairstyle: mine is the low pony tail.

  • My go-to hairstyle is a low pony. Not only does it look slick, it means nobody can see the mess we call greasy hair!
  • I mean, you can go crazy: low ponytail, low bun, french plait… the skies the limitown it

I hope these hacks help you spruce up your hair on those running late, greasy lookin’ (probably Monday) days!

Oh and here is a GIF of a dog who, much like me, hates blow drying his hair!

So I’m also channelling my inner Melissa McCarthy and metaphorically punching this history degree right in the throat. Well attempting to!

Forest & Shore Hallelujah Hair Oil- Review

Forest & Shore Hallelujah Hair Oil- Review

Hi everybody!

A few weeks ago I was approached by Forest & Shore Ltd to try out their Hallelujah Hair Oil.

hair oil
Hallelujah Hair Oil

Since having highlights put in my hair it has been super knotty. This, combined with the cold weather in the winter and blow drying my hair every other day, has meant that my hair was in pretty bad condition. But I have noticed so quickly the improvement! It’s so soft and rejuvenated.

hair 2

Some of the perks of Forest & Shore Hallelujah Hair Oil is that it’s 100% vegan and cruelty free. It’s a synergised blend of coconut, sesame, olive, sunflower and arnica, scented with rosemary and lavender. What’s not to like?! It smells divine and has made my locks silky smooth again!

I highly recommend it to anyone suffering from damaged hair or even those that just fancy giving their hair that little bit more TLC in these chilly months. You can purchase it on the Forest & Shore Ltd Website page or even Amazon!

Treat yo-self!

Wardrobe Malfunctions That Tick Girls Off

Wardrobe Malfunctions That Tick Girls Off

You know when you have a leotard wedgie or stick your thumb through your tights? Thats what this blog is about. All the irritating things clothes can do that make you want to walk around naked!

  1. Trying to  avoid your clothes touching the toilet floor. Bane. Of. My. Life. London is one of my favourite places to travel, but OMG never again shall I wear a jumpsuit while exploring the capital. Sat on the loo, holding your trouser legs up and thinking ‘why is the floor sticky’ is never fun. floor.gif
  2. Being able to fit into an 8 in one shop, and just about squeezing into a 14 in another... how?! What measurements do you use?! clothes
  3. The Leotard Wedgie. Put your hands in the air (like you just don’t care- forever an S Club 7 gal!) and ain’t no top untucking itself. Buuuut, you have a mighty wedgie all day. A compromise? I think not. wedgie
  4. Hat hair. I try to pull of the cute hat look, but always end up with fluffy/ static/ sweaty hair and a silly looking makeup line. hat hair.gif
  5. I love me some Sequins, but can we appreciate the torture of wearing them sometimes? Plus the fact they can’t be washed and fall off everywhere. Scratchy little things. sequins
  6. Sticking your thumb through your tights. Give me strength. This is enough to ruin my mood all day. I even try and pack a second pair now, just in case! tight.gif
  7. When your ripped jeans… rip too much. OK I know this is a mega first world problem and I can hear every over-forty year-old in the country asking me ‘why did you buy ripped jeans then?’. Because they’re cool. OK. They’re not cool, however, when your knee is hanging out of the overly big hole that you busted bending over. Oh and another thing: I get chilly knees!jeans
  8. Side Zips. Pure evil. I genuinely feel like I’m from a scene from Jaws whenever I do up a side zip. The worst is a side zip under your arm. You have the frustration of trying to get the right angle without popping a shoulder. Then the panic that it could nip my skin at any moment. And I’ll be stuck. Forever. *cue dramatic music*jaws.gif
  9. When your little toe pops out of your tights. Makes me cringe even thinking about it. (Makes me cringe using the word cringe) Eugh the horribly cold sensation as the rebel toe escapes. Never sure if it’s cold or a lack of blood supply from the tight-tights. drama.gif
  10. Someone stepping on the back of your flip-flop. This aggravates me immensely. It goes one of two ways: it breaks the toggle-bit between your toes. Or, it shoots forward in an attempt at freedom and you have to hop after it, humiliated. anger.gif

Girl Struggles are one of my favourite things to write about. I think it’s because I’m a little bit dopey sometimes, and have experienced the majority of ‘Girl Struggles’ imaginable.

Hope you enjoyed reading this and maybe you even thought ‘same!’ (I hope someone did!) ,

Girl Struggles

Girl Struggles

There are so many reasons that being a girl rules. For example, we never catch anything when pulling our flies up! Plus, on a more catastrophic note, the world literally wouldn’t exist without women #girlpower.

But in today’s blog I’m going to talk about the realities of being a girl. The #girlstruggles. Here are the things us girls have to put up with:

  1. Dry Shampoo- either a life saver or adds 30 years onto your age, most of the time I find myself weighing up whether to look like Mrs Claus in August or Filch, from Harry Potter.
  2. Having “Man Dolphin” legs- a term I use to describe my legs when I haven’t shaved for a while (when I have they are as smooooth as a dolphin- for like a day!). I feel like “Man Dolphin” is a winter comfort!
  3. Having one “Man Dolphin” leg… how I forget one entire limb I don’t know.
  4. Shaving your armpits- I’m sure there is a perfectly good scientific reason for having hair under your arms, but sometimes it seems like it was part of God’s punishment to Eve. Like why is it there? Why does it grow so fast? Why do I always manage to miss some?
  5. Owning ultra-comfy/mega-old bra- that one you hang onto even though it’s slightly grey, ripping at the seams and the underwire will shortly try and burst a lung. But you can’t find it anywhere else soooo…
  6. On a similar note, the “holy pants”- (I really friggin hope others have this too!) a pair of pants that are your favourite. Super comfy, probably from M&S, that have been worn within an inch of their lives. And are ultimately holey, aka “holy”. Amen.
  7. Strapless bras- a seemingly good idea, until two hours into wearing it, it’s hugging your belly button.
  8. Trying to gracefully get out of a sports bra- an impossible task.
  9. Sanitary Products- needs little explaining. They’re expensive and annoying.
  10. Getting a ladder in your tights- the MOST frustrating thing!
  11. Thongs- weighing up whether the lack of VPL (Visible Pant Line) is worth the hours worth of wedgey.
  12. Jean sizing- every shop is different. I don’t ask for much, I just want something that sucks everything in, holds it in place, makes me have a Kim Kardashian bum and look two sizes smaller, please, thank you, ta.
  13. Bobby pins getting into every nook and cranny- hoovers, washing machines, handbags, pockets…
  14. Smudging freshly painted nails- super frustrating.
  15. Losing earrings back- who hasn’t been on all fours scanning the carpet looking for one of those sodding things?
  16. Streaky fake tan- the patchy, albino cow look is never a good one.
  17. Major break outs- usually the day before you need to look good. I find it’s before school photos, parties or dates.
  18. Hair getting everywhere -.-
  19. The aftermath of heels- blisters and sore soles of feet are enough to make any gal mad.
  20. Losing your underwear in the laundry- besides the usual loss of knickers at home, genuinely through the washing machine, I had one super creepy encounter at University. If you didn’t get there in time to take your washing out of the dryer yourself- people sometimes nicked it! Tell me, who actually wants someone elses knickers?!
  21. Asking for a trim at the hairdressers- and coming out with a friggin bob.
  22. Legs rubbing- the bane of my life on holiday. It’s the worst feeling.
  23. Applying eyeliner- one wing is always higher than the other and I literally cannot talk while I apply it.
  24. Wearing a skirt on a windy day- how did Marilyn Monroe make it look cute?!
  25. Queueing for the girls loo in any club or even event *raises gun to head*
  26. Trying for a smokey eye look- experimenting with a new eyeshadow but ending up sporting the “black eye” look.
  27. Jumpsuits or bodysuits in the toilet- like a friggin puzzle. Not only do you need a wee, you’re worried everyone in the queue thinks you’re taking ages to pee and, as the random spurt of claustrophobia kicks in, you end up hitting your desperately flailing arms on the cubical walls. It’s a mess really.
  28. Windy days + lipstick.
  29. The word “smart-casual”- what does that mean?! For guys its shirts, jeans and a decent pair of shoes… but girls?!
  30. Sneezing when you just put your mascara on.

So there you go, 30 #girlstruggles! Hope you enjoyed reading,

Bee
